If you're considering pottying or Elimination Communication from an early age, nappies with hook and loop fastening are the easiest to get on and off quickly. 

For toilet training toddlers, nappies with stretch at the waist will allow them to pull them up and down themselves. 

Patents often find the feeling of 'being wet' is a helpful teaching tool, and cotton muslins are nice and absorbent for use as inserts so make a great choice. 

Cloth sanitary pads can even be used for toddlers wearing pants.
